Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
Global terrorist designation and prosecution case
Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.
German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.
Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.
Court proceedings and international connections
Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.
In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.
Historical background and organizational structure
Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.
Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.
Previous convictions and international reactions
A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.
The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.
“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
